Mapping NETmundial expected attendance towards a well-balanced multistakeholder meeting /blog/2014/02/25/mapping-netmundial-expected-attendance-towards-a-well-balance-multistakeholder-meeting/ /blog/2014/02/25/mapping-netmundial-expected-attendance-towards-a-well-balance-multistakeholder-meeting/#comments Tue, 25 Feb 2014 14:11:26 +0000 /?p=227 The Expression of Interest period for the NETmundial meeting is open from February 5th until 28th. During this period, the NETmundial Executive Secretariat has been constantly collecting statistical data in order to better understand the characteristics of the expected meeting attendance. The following graphs represent some interesting views of the potential participants in the meeting based on data collected up to February 24th.

The largest share of interest in participating in NETmundial comes from the Private sector (28.8%) and the Civil Society (25.4%), followed by Governments (14.1%), Academia (13,5%) and the Technical Community (12,8%). It is important to note that the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations is receiving Expressions of Interests directly from governments through diplomatic channels. These numbers  will soon be updated.

There have been Expressions of Interest coming from all over the globe, including countries of all continents. The main group of interest in attendance comes from Latin America and Caribbean (38%), while North America and Europe have a similar volume of interests expressed (17.1% and 16.9%, respectively), followed by Asia (13.7%), Africa (10.7%) and Oceania (3.2%).

The following graph depicts the distribution of representatives from each sector and continent. Overall, every continent has all sectors represented, except for Oceania which is still lacking representatives from the academic sector. It is worth highlighting that the African Civil Society sent in more Expressions of Interest while in the Americas it was the Private Sector that sent in more Expressions of Interest.

Approximately 70% of those who filled the Expression of Interest form stated their intention of submitting a content contribution to the meeting covering one of the topics of the event: “Internet Governance Principles” or “Roadmap for the Further Evolution of the Internet Governance Ecosystem”.

NETmundial: Main issues related to the agenda and participation criteria were discussed /blog/2014/01/31/netmundial-main-issues-related-to-the-agenda-and-participation-criteria-were-discussed/ /blog/2014/01/31/netmundial-main-issues-related-to-the-agenda-and-participation-criteria-were-discussed/#comments Fri, 31 Jan 2014 18:26:39 +0000 /?p=112 January 31, 2014 – Sao Paulo, Brazil.  On January 27, both Co-chairs and members of the Executive Multistakeholder Committee met with the Secretariat’s Executive Director to conduct their first meeting where the agenda, the participation criteria, the meeting format and the content contributions were discussed.

The committee reached consensus on the thematic axes “Internet Governance Principles” and “Roadmap for the future evolution of the Internet governance ecosystem”. It was agreed that both agenda topics will be discussed during the meeting in the same physical space to avoid parallel sessions. A basic tentative schedule was discussed and will be announced in the official website www.netmundial.org  soon.

There will be a way for the interested persons/institutions to inform their “expression of interest” in the website throughout the month of February. Participation will be open, taking in account that there is a limit of available seats. The committee will commit to criteria that assure a truly multistakeholder and regional balance among all the interested parties. The meeting will also offer remote participation possibilities in all UN official languages plus Portuguese.

The Executive Multistakeholder Committee planned two additional face-to-face meetings in early March and early April. A teleconference call will be scheduled as necessary.

Check here the executive report of the meeting on January 27.

Global Multistakeholder Meeting on the Future of the Internet Governance /blog/2013/11/26/global-multistakeholder-meeting-on-the-future-of-the-internet-governance/ /blog/2013/11/26/global-multistakeholder-meeting-on-the-future-of-the-internet-governance/#comments Tue, 26 Nov 2013 12:35:49 +0000 /?p=43 Announcement of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee about the Global Multistakeholder Meeting on the Future of the Internet Governance.

President Dilma Rousseff’s speech at the United Nations and the Montevideo Statement1 prompted the opportunity to discuss proposals on a new Internet governance, which became possible by the Brazilian initiative to host the Global Multistakeholder Meeting on the Future of the Internet Governance. The meeting is scheduled for 23 and 24 April 2014, in São Paulo/SP, and will be organized in a partnership between CGI.br and international entities representing the different sectors involved with Internet governance.

The meeting represents an opportunity for government leaders and representatives from different global sectors to discuss proposals about Internet governance and development. The purpose of that meeting is to pursue consensus about universally accepted governance principles and to improve their institutional framework.

The event shall have the participation of governments, civil society, academy, international organisms and entities, as well as technical and business communities.

“We would like to thank the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee for its role organizing that meeting. I genuinely believe that the global Internet community will gather in this truly multistakeholder opportunity with the goal of shaping the future towards the continued prosperity and growth of the Internet”, said Adiel A. Akplogan, CEO at AfriNIC and coordinator of 1Net.

President Rousseff nominated Prof. Virgilio Fernandes Almeida, Coordinator of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee and Secretary for Informatics Policies, to coordinate the organization for that meeting.

“The Internet Steering Committee acknowledges the opportunity to discuss new paths for the global Internet governance and appreciates the importance of a multistakeholder meeting for those discussions”, said Professor Virgilio Almeida.

Four committees shall be created in order to warrant the event’s success. The committees will have the support of a shared secretary, which shall help them to conduct their work and to coordinate the communications.

The four meeting committees are:

1. High-Level Multistakeholder Committee: Responsible for conducting the political articulation and fostering the involvement of the international community.

2. Executive Multistakeholder Committee: Responsible for organizing the event, including the agenda discussion and execution, and for the treatment of the proposals from participants and different stakeholders;

3. Logistics and Organizational Committee: Responsible for overseeing every logistic aspect of the meeting;

4. Governmental Advisory Committee: Will stay open to all governments which want to contribute to the meeting.

The meeting will allow face-to-face and remote participation of the global community. Mechanisms and the schedule for receiving inputs of the global community will be established.
